The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is Pakistan's premier intelligence agency, gathering and analyzing information critical to national security. Officer-level entry is open to both men and women through two distinct routes. This guide covers eligibility, the exam pattern, and the full selection process.

Grade 17 Assistant Director entry rank
21–35 Age range (relaxable)
6 Months Training at DSIA
5 Years Probation before core placement

Two Routes to Become an ISI Officer

ISI does not run a standalone public recruitment portal for officers. Entry happens through:

  1. Armed Forces secondment — commissioned officers selected internally.
  2. Direct civilian entry — Assistant Director (Grade 17), advertised via Ministry of Defence.

Route 1 — Via Armed Forces (Army, Navy, PAF)

Commissioned officers selected internally — no direct application

  • Join as a commissioned officer through PMA, PN, or PAF academies.
  • Clear ISSB during initial selection.
  • Serve for a number of years in your parent service.
  • Selection for ISI secondment is on merit and ISI's discretion — there is no direct application for this route; eligibility and service terms follow your parent branch's commission, not a separate ISI contract.

For ISSB preparation, see our ISSB Forum guide. For a full eligibility breakdown before applying, check our Armed Forces Eligibility Checker.

Route 2 — Direct Entry as Assistant Director (Grade 17)

Advertised via FPSC, on merit, through Ministry of Defence notices

Assistant Director (Grade 17) — Eligibility & Facts

Eligibility

  • Gender: Male / Female
  • Age: 21–28, relaxable to 35
  • Education: Bachelor's degree (BA/BSc/BE), minimum 2nd division, HEC-recognized university — Master's or higher preferred
  • Entry grade: BPS-17
  • Advertised as: "AD, Ministry of Defence" — the hiring agency is not named in the ad

Job Nature

  • ➤ Regular, permanent, pensionable government post under the Ministry of Defence — not a contract role.
  • ➤ Promotion track extends up to Director General (Grade 21).

Advertisement Frequency

  • ➤ Irregular — roughly once every one to two years, sometimes twice in a year. No fixed annual cycle.

Where to Monitor Vacancies

  • ➤ FPSC's official site (fpsc.gov.pk)
  • ➤ National newspapers (classified/job sections)
  • ➤ Ministry of Defence recruitment notices

Since the post is listed generically as "AD, Ministry of Defence," applicants often don't know upfront which agency they're applying to.

Selection Process — Step by Step

1

Vacancy advertised by Ministry of Defence via FPSC.

2

Written test conducted by NTS.

3

FPSC shortlists candidates based on written test scores and eligibility criteria (age, education, domicile).

4

FPSC forwards the shortlist to ISI.

5

ISI conducts preliminary background checks.

6

Joint ISI–FPSC panel interview.

7

Psychological, medical, and fitness evaluations.

8

Security clearance.

9

Six months training at Defence Services Intelligence Academy (DSIA).

10

Posted to open-source information sections for a 5-year probation period.

11

After 5 years, entrusted with sensitive roles as part of the core team.

Written Exam Pattern

Essay

100 marks · 3 hours · 2,500–3,000 words

Common themes: democracy in Pakistan, economic development, energy crisis, war on terror, nuclear proliferation, civil-military relations.

Current Affairs

100 marks · 5 questions (1 compulsory)

Prep areas: national issues (Balochistan, Afghan relations, CPEC), regional dynamics (Pakistan-China, Pakistan-India, Pakistan-Iran), global affairs (US foreign policy, international organizations). CSS International Relations past papers are a useful reference.

Interview & Psychological Assessment

Most candidates clear the written test — the interview is the real filter. Evaluators assess:

  • Response time and reasoning
  • Communication skills
  • Adaptability
  • Decision-making under pressure
  • Family background and integrity

Building Relevant Skills Before You Apply

  • Sharpen English writing and comprehension for the essay/current affairs papers.
  • Study international relations and Pakistan's regional geopolitics consistently, not just before an exam.
  • Build analytical and quick-reasoning ability — practice case-based and situational reasoning.
  • Maintain a clean personal, financial, and legal record — vetting is rigorous.
  • Consider language skills (Arabic, Persian, Chinese) as a differentiator for specialist tracks.
